Why We Wrote This
Terms like natural, clean, and eco-friendly appear on cosmetic products everywhere — but none of them has a single standardized legal definition in the EU or elsewhere. That means two very different products can carry the same label. At Lunor, we believe you deserve to know exactly what sits behind the words we use.
What 'Natural' Means in Lunor Formulations
When Lunor describes a product or ingredient as natural, we mean it is derived from a plant, mineral, or other naturally occurring source with minimal processing. We aim to use nature-derived ingredients as the primary functional components in our formulas. Where a synthetic ingredient is used, it is because a safe, effective, or sufficiently stable natural alternative does not exist for that function — and we will say so plainly.
We do not use the word "natural" as a synonym for:
- "Free from all synthetic ingredients" — some preservation systems and texture-stabilisers require synthetic components to ensure product safety.
- "Organic" — unless a product or ingredient carries a certified organic designation, we do not use that term.
- "Hypoallergenic" — natural ingredients can and do cause allergic reactions in some individuals. We do not make blanket hypoallergenic claims.
- "Medically therapeutic" — Lunor products are cosmetics, not medicines. We do not claim to treat, cure, or prevent any skin condition or disease.
How to Read an Ingredient Label (INCI)
Every Lunor product lists its ingredients in INCI order — International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients. Here is what that means in practice:
- Highest concentration first. The first ingredient on the list is present in the greatest amount; the last is present in the smallest amount.
- Water (Aqua) is usually first. This is normal and does not indicate a "watered-down" formula — water is an essential carrier for many active and conditioning agents.
- 1% threshold. EU regulations allow ingredients present at 1% or less to be listed in any order after the ingredients above 1%. Fragrance components (parfum/aroma) and colourants typically appear at this threshold or below.
- Latin names for botanicals. Plant-derived ingredients use their Latin botanical name (e.g. Rosa canina fruit oil) so you can look them up independently.
- Preservatives and chelating agents. These appear near the end of the list because they are used at very low concentrations — but their presence is intentional. Preservatives keep products safe and prevent microbial growth over the product's shelf life.
Claims We Make — and Claims We Don't
| We say | We don't say |
|---|---|
| Nature-derived / plant-derived | 100% natural (unless verifiably true) |
| Formulated without [specific ingredient] | "Chemical-free" (all matter is chemical) |
| Dermatologist-tested (where tested) | Dermatologist-approved or -recommended |
| Suitable for sensitive skin (where validated) | Hypoallergenic |
| Certified organic ingredient (where certified) | Organic product (unless the full product is certified) |
| Helps to [moisturise / soothe / nourish] | Treats, cures, or prevents any skin condition |
Fragrance Transparency
EU law requires that 26 listed fragrance allergens be declared individually on the label if they exceed 0.001% in leave-on products or 0.01% in rinse-off products. Lunor complies with these requirements. If you have a known fragrance sensitivity, you can check the full ingredient list on each product page or contact us before purchasing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Are Lunor products certified natural or organic?
A: Individual ingredients in some formulations hold organic certification. We specify this on the relevant product pages. The overall product range does not currently carry a single overarching natural or organic certification body label.
Q: What does "free from" mean on a Lunor label?
A: It means that specific ingredient was not used in the formula. It does not imply the ingredient is harmful — it reflects a deliberate formulation choice based on our standards or customer preference.
Q: Can I use Lunor products if I have sensitive skin?
A: We formulate with sensitivity in mind, but skin sensitivity is individual. We recommend checking the full ingredient list, performing a patch test on a small area before first use, and consulting a dermatologist if you have a diagnosed skin condition.
Q: Where can I find the full ingredient list for a product?
A: Every product page on our website includes the complete INCI ingredient list. If anything is unclear, contact us and we will answer your question directly.
Q: Are Lunor products tested on animals?
A: Lunor products are not tested on animals. EU cosmetics regulations prohibit animal testing for cosmetic products and ingredients sold in the EU.
