The Problem Preservatives Solve

Any product containing water is a potential environment for bacteria, yeast, and mould to grow. Without a preservation system, a cream or lotion can become contaminated within days of opening — long before you'd notice by looking or smelling it. Preservatives exist to prevent this, protecting both the product and the person using it.

Does 'Natural' Mean No Preservatives?

No. A formula can be nature-derived in its functional ingredients and still require a preservation system to remain safe over its shelf life. Some preservative options are derived from natural sources, others are synthetic. We select based on effectiveness against the specific microbial risks of a formula, compatibility with the other ingredients, and safety at the concentration used — not on the perceived "naturalness" of the preservative alone.

How We Choose Ours

  • Broad-spectrum effectiveness. The preservative system needs to work against bacteria, yeast, and mould relevant to the product's water content and packaging.
  • Compatibility. It must remain stable and effective alongside the product's other ingredients, pH, and packaging over time.
  • Regulatory compliance. All preservatives we use are permitted under EU cosmetics regulation at their approved usage levels.
  • Minimum effective concentration. We use the lowest concentration that reliably protects the product — not more than necessary.

What This Means for You

A properly preserved product is safer to use over its full shelf life. If you notice a change in colour, smell, or texture in any Lunor product, stop using it and contact us — that can be a sign the product has been compromised, regardless of how it was preserved.
